Origin of Dragon Boat Festival:

The Dragon Boat Festival is the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year. It is also called the Dragon Boat Festival, the Noon Festival, the May Festival, the Five Day Festival, the Wormwood Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Double Ninth Festival, the Noon Day, and the Summer Festival. It was originally a festival in summer to fight off plagues. The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional festival of the Han people in China. The essential activities on this day gradually evolved into eating Zongzi, racing dragon boats, hanging calamus, Artemisia argyi, fumigation, angelica dahurica, and drinking Realgar wine.
It is said that the custom of eating Zongzi and racing dragon boats on the Dragon Boat Festival is to commemorate Qu Yuan, the great poet in Chinese history, and it is precisely because of this that the Dragon Boat Festival was named “Poet’s Day” after the founding of New China.
Qu Yuan is one of the greatest Romantic poets in China, the earliest known famous poet in China, and a world-renowned cultural figure. He founded the literary style of “Chu Ci” and also created the tradition of “fragrant grass beauty”. Representative works include “Li Sao” and “Nine Songs”.
In Chinese history, the saying that Dragon Boat Festival is to commemorate Qu Yuan has a history of more than 1500 years. According to legend, after Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River, the local people rowed boats to rescue him at once, and went all the way to Dongting Lake. Qu Yuan’s body was never seen. At that time, on a rainy day, the small boats on the lake gathered together by the pavilion on the shore. When people learned that it was to salvage the wise minister, Doctor Qu, they went out again in the rain and rushed to the vast Dongting Lake. In order to express their grief, people rowed on rivers, which gradually developed into dragon boat races. The people were afraid that the fish in the river would eat his body, so they went home and threw rice balls into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from spoiling Qu Yuan’s body. Later, it became a custom to eat Zongzi.
